About the Gibson Les Paul Standard

The Les Paul Standard is Gibson's core Les Paul, made in Nashville, USA: a mahogany back under a carved, figured maple top, a set mahogany neck, a bound rosewood board with 22 frets and trapezoid inlays on a 24.75 inch scale, two humbuckers and a Tune-O-Matic bridge with a stop tailpiece. Dated examples run from 1990 to 2019.

Weighed 1990s examples run about 9.75 to 11.4 lb (4.4 to 5.2 kg), those from 2012 to 2014 about 8.4 to 9.2 lb (3.8 to 4.2 kg); from 2012 the back is weight relieved. Burstbucker Pro pickups, designed for the Standard in 2002, are on dated examples from 2012 to 2019, with push-pull switches on all four knobs for coil splits, phase reverse and a bypass that sends the bridge pickup straight to the jack; the 2019 version also has an internal DIP switch. From 2012 most have locking Grover tuners, the 2012 to 2014 ones a locking TonePros bridge, and the 2013 and 2014 ones a compound 10 to 16 inch radius. Necks dated 1996 to 2012 are a rounded 1950s or a slim 1960s shape; from 2013 to 2019, an asymmetrical SlimTaper, fuller on the bass side. Some examples from the 2010s, the 2015 model among them, have self-tuning robot tuners.

They came in a Gibson hardshell case, often black. Expect finish checking on 1990s examples, especially on the headstock face, and ask which tuners, strap buttons and saddles are original. Sunbursts lead the finishes, with Wine Red, black and limited colors such as Cobalt Burst.
