Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor

Über Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor

The Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor is a noise gate that cuts hiss and hum from noisy pedals and high-gain rigs. Its defining feature is a send/return loop: rather than only gating the signal in front of it, you can route a whole section of your chain through the loop so the gate silences all of it. It is a long-standing, inexpensive board staple.

Owners treat the NS-2 as the go-to affordable noise gate, and the advice they repeat most is how to wire it. The recommended approach is the 4-cable method: run all your noisy gain pedals inside the NS-2's send/return loop, so the gate reads your clean guitar signal to decide when to open and close and silences the whole dirty section transparently. Done that way, owners report even a very high-gain rig going dead silent. If you are not using the loop, put it after the noisy pedals, because a gate only affects what comes before it in the chain. Two honest caveats: some feel the NS-2 dulls the tone a touch, and many point out that the real fix is often a good isolated power supply, which can remove the need for a gate at all. If you want a step up, owners name the ISP Decimator, the TC Sentry and the Boss NS-1X.
