Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

Über Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

The Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive is one of Boss's oldest and best-selling pedals, an inexpensive overdrive in production since 1981. Electrically it is close to a Tube Screamer but uses asymmetrical clipping, giving a mid-focused voice that is a touch more open and gritty and not fully transparent. It has a buffered bypass rather than true bypass, and Boss offers a Waza Craft version, the SD-1W.

Owners rate the SD-1 as one of the great budget overdrives, and it is among Boss's best-selling pedals; some prefer it even to a Tube Screamer, though a group find its mid-hump untransparent and the controls limited and reach for a Boss OD-3 or another drive instead. The single most repeated point is how to use it: it was made to push an amp that is already driven, not to sit standalone in front of a clean amp, so owners run it as a boost with the level up, the drive low and the tone to taste. It stacks well too, in front of a Blues Driver for hard-rock leads or ahead of a fuzz or distortion to tighten and push it. One recurring debate is its buffered bypass: some feel it saps mids and lows when off and want true bypass, while others point to tests showing the effect is negligible.
