Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer

Über Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer

The Electro-Harmonix Freeze is a sound-retainer pedal: step on it and it captures the note or chord you are playing and sustains it indefinitely, like a held pad, while you keep playing over the top. It offers fast, slow and latching modes for how the frozen sound comes in and holds, and it comes in a full-size and a compact version. It is a simple, one-job pedal aimed at instant infinite sustain.

Owners like the Freeze for exactly what it does, one calls it a great pedal, others describe it as a fun box, and it even turns up as a Bill Frisell tool. The core use is obvious but powerful: freeze a chord and solo or practice scales over the held drone, or, as bass players do, hold a sustained pad to fill out the sound while you cover the rhythm during a lead. Owners fold it into ambient rigs and experiment with placement, running it after an octave pedal like a POG or ahead of a looper works well. Just know going in that it is a one-trick pedal, all it does is freeze and sustain, and at around a hundred pounds some owners weigh it against alternatives that add more, an EHX Superego, a TC Electronic Infinite, or a FreqOut for a more tweakable feedback-style sustain. For instant infinite sustain, though, it does the job simply and well.
