Electro-Harmonix Ram's Head Big Muff Pi

Über Electro-Harmonix Ram's Head Big Muff Pi

The Big Muff is one of the most famous fuzz pedals ever made: a high-sustain fuzz (technically a multi-stage distortion) known for its thick 'wall of sound'. It has been made in many voicings and reissues since 1969, and owners choose by version. The Op-Amp is the Smashing Pumpkins 'Siamese Dream' sound, the Ram's Head is brighter and bitier and a favourite for leads (a David Gilmour tone), and the Green Russian is smoother and bassier for doom and 90s Gilmour sounds. The circuit is simple and much cloned.

Owners are clear about what a Big Muff is and is not. It is a fuzz that does one enormous sound gloriously, but it does not clean up from the guitar volume the way a Fuzz Face does and it is not a subtle overdrive: the Muff wants to be a Muff. It is also mid-scooped and bassy, so on its own it can get lost in a band mix; the usual fix is a boost or EQ to add mids and help it cut. On stacking, the advice is consistent: run drives into the Muff rather than after it (an overdrive or a RAT into a Big Muff works, an OD placed after it usually does not), and keep the fuzz early in the chain. Which one to buy is the real question, since the voicings differ more than the price does. A common suggestion is to start with an inexpensive EHX nano reissue and find your flavour before diving into boutique clones like the EQD Hoof or the JHS Muffuletta, which packs several Muffs in one box.
