Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive

Über Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive

The EHX Soul Food is an affordable take on the Klon Centaur, a 'Klone': a low-to-medium-gain overdrive and boost. Despite the transparent-overdrive reputation Klon-style pedals carry, it is a little mid-focused and does add its own colour to the tone. It is one of the cheaper entries into the Klon sound, alongside pedals like the Wampler Tumnus, Ryra and various 'archer' clones.

Owners rate the Soul Food as a strong-value Klone, and a fair few use it more than their Tube Screamer. The classic way to run it is as a clean boost with the gain low and the level up, pushing the amp or another drive; it stacks especially well into a Tube Screamer or an OCD, which is where many keep it. Worth knowing, as owners repeatedly point out, is that Klon-style pedals are not truly transparent, so the Soul Food will colour the sound with a mild mid-push. Those who have compared it to higher-end Klones such as a Wampler Tumnus, Silver Archer or Ryra often find those a step up in clarity, though at several times the price. One practical gripe: the EHX footswitch can feel stiff or stick, and the switches are on the loud side.
