Electro-Harmonix Nano Small Stone EH4800 Phase Shifter V2

Über Electro-Harmonix Nano Small Stone EH4800 Phase Shifter V2

The EHX Small Stone is a classic analog phaser with a wide, swirly, smeary voice and a Color (Depth) switch that broadens the sweep. Owners describe it as washier and more space-rock than a Phase 90, and at its best on clean tones. It has been made in many versions over the years, from the early US units and the Sovtek Russian versions to the current V4 reissue.

Owners love the Small Stone for its wide, swirly, smeary phase, the classic space-rock swoosh; several say they will reach for it before a Phase 90, and long-time owners simply love theirs. It is at its best on clean tones and feels washier than the tighter, more cutting Phase 90, so if you mainly want phase on high-gain sounds a Phase 90 may suit better. The one thing owners flag is a slight volume drop that varies from unit to unit. On versions there are a lot of them (early US, Sovtek Black and Green Russian, later US reissues, up to the V4), and the V4 is the common go-to; owners say the sonic differences are subtle, with one who owns them all hearing little between them, while a few prefer the Black Russian for a slightly less cartoonish sweep. If you are buying or selling a vintage one, price it off actual sold listings on Reverb or eBay rather than asking prices, and remember the original knob matters: a wrong or replacement knob knocks the value down, and expect some lowball offers.
