About the Fender Mustang Bass
The Mustang Bass is the short-scale student bass Fender introduced in 1966 as a companion to the Mustang guitar, built at Fullerton, California. It has a 30 inch scale and 19 frets on a 7.25 inch radius; one split single coil feeds one volume and one tone control, and the strings load through the body into a bridge with a saddle and a foam mute for each string. Later versions made in Japan and Mexico are not covered here.
The 1960s colors were Dakota Red, Olympic White and Daphne Blue, over alder. In the 1970s many bodies are ash, beside sunburst, black, white, Mocha Brown, Wine Red and Antigua, and late 1970s basses sometimes have a maple neck and board. To date one, read the neck heel stamp (17OCT72B on a 1972). The serial is a six-digit number on the neck plate until the late 1970s, then an S number on a headstock decal with a matching sticker under the pickguard. Neck, pot, pickup and serial dates often disagree, so use them together; original pickups have gray bottoms and are often dated. Measured nuts run 1.56 to 1.64 inch, and necks 0.82 to 0.90 inch deep at the first fret. Weighed 1960s examples come in at 7.4 to 8.2 lb (3.3 to 3.7 kg); 1970s ones range from 7 to 10.1 lb (3.2 to 4.6 kg). Check for crumbled mute foam, a missing or moved finger rest, a replaced nut, refrets, refinishes, a truss rod at the end of its travel and a body routed for another pickup.
