Fender Mustang Guitar

About the Fender Mustang Guitar

The Mustang is the student guitar Fender introduced in 1964, part of a redesign of its student line alongside the Duo-Sonic and Musicmaster. US production ended in 1982 and reissues followed. This text covers the 1960s originals from Fullerton, California; Japanese-made reissues and parts also turn up.

The usual scale is 24 inch; a 22.5 inch neck is uncommon. Bodies are alder or poplar, the maple neck has a rosewood board on a 7.25 inch radius, and some 1965 and 1966 necks have a slab board. Each angled single coil has its own slide switch: middle is off, and the two on positions set the phase, so both together can be in or out of phase. One volume and one tone serve both; the bridge floats, with the Dynamic Vibrato tailpiece. Colors were Dakota Red, Daphne Blue (usually aged green) and Olympic White (usually aged cream); white ones have a tortoise guard, the others pearloid.

To date one, read the heel stamp: a date plus A (about 1 1/2 inch at the nut, on either scale) or B (1 5/8 inch). B necks measure 1.61 to 1.64 inch at the nut and 0.83 to 0.90 inch deep at the first fret. An L serial on the neck plate means before CBS; later plates have six digits. Parts came from stock, so check neck, pots (304-6542 is week 42 of 1965) and pickups together. Weighed examples run 6.8 to 8.1 lb (3.1 to 3.7 kg). Expect refrets, replaced slide switches, missing vibrato arms, refinishes, swapped pickups and failing case latches.
