About the Fender American Standard Precision Bass
The American Standard Precision Bass is the US-made P Bass that Fender built until the American Professional series took its place. It has an alder body, a maple neck with a modern C profile, a rosewood or maple board, a 34 inch scale, a 9.5 inch radius, 20 medium jumbo frets and the standard B width nut of 1.625 inch (41.3 mm). A few have an ash body instead, and those are seldom seen.
The change that matters when you buy one is 2008. Basses from then on have a Custom Shop '60s split single coil, a High Mass Vintage bridge that takes the strings through the body or from the top, and graphite support rods in the neck; the later tuners are about 30 percent lighter than the vintage-style originals, by Fender's figure. Weighed examples come in at about 8.2 to 9.4 lb (3.7 to 4.3 kg), and measured necks from 2008 to 2015 are about 0.80 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret and 0.93 to 0.95 inch at the twelfth. Late 1990s basses came in a Fender molded hard case, later ones in a molded SKB-made case with TSA locks, with hang tags, adjustment wrenches and a polishing cloth. Replacement pickups and wiring are the usual change, so ask whether the original parts come with it. Finishes include 3-Color Sunburst, Black, Olympic White, Inca Silver, Blizzard Pearl and Jade Pearl Metallic.
