IK Multimedia ToneX

About the IK Multimedia ToneX

The IK Multimedia ToneX is an amp and pedal profiler, closer to a Kemper than a traditional modeler: instead of emulating circuits, it plays back captures (Tone Models) of real amps, cabs and dirt pedals, and each preset is a whole captured chain with built-in compression, EQ, noise gate and reverb. A later firmware update added delay and modulation. There is a huge library of free and paid captures through the ToneNET community, an editor app, a full-size pedal and a tiny ToneX One, and the pedal draws around 320mA.

What owners have said elsewhere

Owners love the ToneX, and the phrase that comes up most is that it sounds and feels like a real amp. One who has owned most of the major modelers still calls it his favourite for the size and price, others say it is 100 percent worth every penny, and several who also own a Quad Cortex or a Kemper rate the ToneX's captures as the most accurate of the three. How owners use it is worth copying: treat each bank as a channel-switching amp, clean, crunch and lead, and run your own overdrive pedals in front if you like, since a capture is a whole chain. The catch owners are honest about is the workflow. It can be genuinely fiddly, the built-in effects are limited and it runs on the noisy side, and a couple sold theirs because getting good sounds took real effort. The software editor is not optional: without it people call it a nightmare, with it they call it sublime, and a fuller solution like a Quad Cortex has a nicer interface and better onboard effects. Mind the power too, it wants around 320mA.
