About the MXR M104 Distortion +
The MXR Distortion+ is a classic, simple two-knob (Output and Distortion) pedal from the 1970s, built on an op-amp hard-clipping circuit. It has a lot of output on tap and ranges from a near-clean push to a square-wave buzz, and it behaves more like an overdrive than a modern high-gain distortion. It shares its circuit with the DOD 250.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 160 discussion threads among 11 owners, 2024-2025. No names, nothing quoted.
The Distortion+ is one of the original dirt pedals, a simple two-knob (Output and Distortion) op-amp hard-clipper from the 1970s that rotates in and out of the conversation alongside the DS-1, RAT and Tube Screamer. It is really an overdrive rather than a modern high-gain distortion: lots of output on tap, and it dials from a near-clean push to a square-wave buzz. Owners rate it a genuine classic, saying it sounds awesome and is not a bad pedal at all, though a few find it tame or feel it is nothing special (an op-amp hard-clipper like many others). Where it shines is pushing a cranked tube amp, the way Randy Rhoads used one to goose his Marshall; owners clean it up with the guitar volume and stack it as a boost into fuzz or other dirt. It is cheap, its circuit is shared with the DOD 250, the Whirlwind Gold is the original circuit updated, and the Randy Rhoads version is cosmetically different (polka dots) but essentially the same pedal.
