Owners treat the M87 as a classic, transparent bass compressor and a board staple, several calling it the most important pedal on their bass board. It gives you real studio-style controls and owners often liken it to an 1176, dialing in cleanly with no mush or added coloration, and it is versatile enough for guitar, not just bass. Common advice is to put the compressor first in the chain so your signal is consistent before any tone shaping, and to place an EQ after it rather than before, since EQ ahead of a compressor changes how it responds. Some longtime owners have since moved to other compressors, like the MXR Studio or a Darkglass, for a bit more character.
