Boss BF-3 Flanger

Über Boss BF-3 Flanger

The Boss BF-3 Flanger is a versatile flanger with several modes: standard and ultra flanging for everything from subtle sweep to jet-plane whoosh, a momentary mode that flanges only while you hold the switch, and a gate/pan mode that turns the effect into a rhythmic stutter. It has both guitar and bass inputs and stereo outputs, and it is the successor to the older BF-2.

Owners are warm on the BF-3: they call it beautiful and a must-have flanger, a great choice, and one runs it even alongside a Helix because he prefers its flanger to the modeled ones. The feature people rave about is the extra modes, the gate/pan mode acts as a cool stutter effect, and several highlight the momentary mode, where the flange only sounds while you hold the switch, as the way to flange just a few bars of a rhythm part or a solo rather than a whole song. It also handles bass. The honest split is with the old BF-2: one long-time BF-2 owner found the BF-3 a let-down, another says he never really jived with it and prefers the MXR flanger sound, and a couple who want true-bypass reach for something like a TC Vortex instead. But as a do-a-lot flanger that takes guitar or bass, it stays a common recommendation.
