Electro-Harmonix B9 Organ Machine

Über Electro-Harmonix B9 Organ Machine

The Electro-Harmonix B9 Organ Machine turns an electric guitar into an organ, tracking your playing and replacing it with Hammond-B3-style organ voices. It has a Dry and an Organ blend, separate dry and effect outputs, and a set of preset organ sounds. Because it follows pitch, it needs a clean signal to track properly, so it wants to sit early in the chain, and its sibling, the C9, offers more organ voicings. It is fussy about power, preferring its own adapter.

Owners who want organ sounds from a guitar get on well with the B9: one says it sounds great with overdrive, another has used his for a great bass-organ setting, and a long-time owner (since 2016) calls it excellent in most respects and uses it as his keyboards voice for solo looping. The keys to using it come up repeatedly: because it is a pitch follower it needs a clean signal, so put it early, before your dirt, and keep it out of a noise gate, blend or split its dry and organ outputs (some run the wet organ one way and dry guitar another), and add a uni-vibe to fake the spinning Leslie. It also pairs surprisingly well with a fuzz for gnarly octave-organ tones. The honest caveats: it is not cheap, and some owners can never quite justify the price, its stablemate the C9 (or a POG3) offers more or better organ voices, it really wants its own power supply or it gets noisy, and switching between held-note and tracking modes live means some foot-dancing. For convincing organ from a guitar, though, it delivers.
