MXR M101 Phase 90

Über MXR M101 Phase 90

The MXR Phase 90 is the classic one-knob analog phaser: a single Speed control and a sound made famous by Eddie Van Halen. It comes in two voicings, the smoother, more subtle Script and the more pronounced Block. The compact Phase 95 packs both modes with true bypass, the EVH Phase 90 adds a script switch, and the circuit is a common platform for mods (Analog Man among them) that add a blend or volume control.

Owners treat the Phase 90 as a classic, but its best-known quirk is that engaging it can bump the volume; they disagree on how much, since it is partly unit-to-unit, and it is the pedal's main gripe. Ways to tame it come up often: put a boost after it to return to unity, choose a version with a blend control (the JHS 3 Series phaser is a common pick), or remove the R28 resistor, the 'Script mod', on older units. On placement, owners run it early, before the drive pedals as Eddie Van Halen did, to colour the signal, and note the effect changes noticeably with position. Against an EHX Small Stone, they find the Phase 90 has a cutting quality that suits high-gain and distorted tones, while the Small Stone is wider and swirlier and better on cleans.
