MXR CSP027 Timmy Overdrive

Über MXR CSP027 Timmy Overdrive

The Timmy is one of the original transparent overdrives, a low-gain drive designed by Paul Cochrane and made here under licence by MXR. Its defining feature is an active bass and treble EQ that only cuts, never boosts, so it shapes the tone without adding a mid-hump and keeps the character of your guitar and amp. The MXR version makes the once-boutique, wait-listed Timmy widely and affordably available.

Owners describe the Timmy as the transparent overdrive: low gain, with a cut-only bass and treble EQ that lets you shape the sound without stamping a mid-hump on it, so what comes out still sounds like your guitar and amp. The way most run it is as an always-on tone-shaper, volume up and gain low into an amp at the edge of breakup, controlling the drive from the guitar's volume knob. It is a long-standing favourite that people gig for years and keep as a go-to. The flip side of being transparent is that it is subtle: it is only as good as the guitar and amp in front of it, and a few owners find it underwhelming or dismiss it as a Klon knockoff (it is not). It is also much copied, and the Mooer Pure Sky in particular is a very close, cheap clone that owners rate highly for the money.
