MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay

Über MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay

The MXR Carbon Copy is an all-analog bucket-brigade delay offering around 600ms of delay time and built-in modulation. Its character is warm and dark: each repeat softens and degrades as it trails off, sitting behind the dry signal rather than on top of it, and it will self-oscillate into runaway feedback with the repeats turned up. The modulation is set with internal trim pots on the standard pedal; the Carbon Copy Deluxe adds tap tempo, longer time and external modulation controls, and there is a space-saving Mini.

Owners hold the Carbon Copy in high regard, many calling it a legendary analog delay with an instantly agreeable tone that stays on boards for decades. Its dark, degrading voice is the whole point for its fans and the main knock against it for others, who find it murky or say it gets lost in a loud band mix. That warmth is what makes it a natural complement to a brighter, more pristine digital delay, and many owners run two delays for exactly that reason, leaning on the Carbon Copy for dark, atmospheric repeats on clean or lightly-driven tones. It is valued for being simple and well-built, a great delay with no frills; owners who want tap tempo and external modulation control step up to the Deluxe, or take the Mini to save space. Two things come up often: it self-oscillates nicely for feedback swells, and setting the internal modulation trim pots to a subtle chorus is a favourite tweak.
