MXR CSP039 Duke of Tone Overdrive

Über MXR CSP039 Duke of Tone Overdrive

The MXR Duke of Tone is MXR's affordable, mass-produced take on the Analog Man Prince of Tone, which is itself one half of the sought-after (and long-waitlisted) King of Tone. It is a small, transparent overdrive with a three-mode switch, boost, overdrive and distortion, runs on 9 to 18 volts, and unlike the King of Tone has no waiting list. Its closest sibling, the Prince of Tone, adds a bit more gain and two internal dip switches the Duke leaves out.

Owners are won over by the Duke of Tone: buyers call it amazing, wonderful, a great transparent overdrive with a great price and plenty of options, and it comes up again and again as a pedal people simply love and reach for. Practically, it is the King of Tone sound without the years-long waitlist, and it earns its keep as a boost, an overdrive, an amp-in-a-box or a light distortion thanks to its mode switch, running anywhere from 9 to 18 volts. It stacks beautifully, owners run it alongside a Wampler Tumnus set cleaner for two distinct overdrive voices, or into an EHX OD Glove for a classic-rock tone, and the build inspires enough confidence to buy one used. The honest debate is how close it gets to the real thing: some owners with a King of Tone feel the Duke does not come all the way there, while others who have a Prince of Tone say the difference is basically nothing beyond the Duke being a touch brighter. Either way, most agree that for the money, and for another thirty-odd dollars you could step up to the Prince, it is a lot of overdrive.
