EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Hybrid Fuzz V2

About the EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Hybrid Fuzz V2

The EarthQuaker Devices Hoof is EQD's take on a green-Russian-style Big Muff, built with a hybrid silicon and germanium circuit. Unlike a stock Muff it cleans up with your guitar volume like a fuzz face and adds a shift EQ for mids and treble, so it works as a fuzz, distortion, overdrive or boost. Owners hear it as tighter and more flexible than a real Russian Muff.

Owners really like the Hoof. It is EQD's green-Russian-style Big Muff built with a mix of silicon and germanium, and its trick is that, unlike a stock Muff, it cleans up with your guitar volume like a fuzz face and adds a shift EQ for mids and treble, so the same box does fuzz, distortion, overdrive or boost. People call it their favourite EQD pedal, the best of the muff variants they have tried, and a couple of self-described non-fuzz players say it is the pedal that finally won them over. It reads as tighter and more usable than a real Russian Muff. On placement, treat it as a Muff: the usual advice is light to heavy (overdrive, then distortion, then the Hoof), but because it is a Muff-style circuit rather than a Fuzz Face it is not fussy about buffers and can go anywhere it sounds good. Two honest caveats: it leans dark, which can be too much into a bright or solid-state amp, and there is always a little grit even with the sustain right down, so it will not do a fully clean boost. It sits around the $200 mark and is most often compared with EQD's own Hizumitas, with owners casting the Hoof as the flexible all-rounder and the Hizumitas as the wilder, more over-the-top fuzz.
