EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Small Signal Shredder

About the EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Small Signal Shredder

The EarthQuaker Devices Plumes is EQD's take on the Tube Screamer, but voiced more open and less mid-humped, marketed for people who do not like Tube Screamers. It is a low-gain overdrive with a three-mode clipping toggle: a classic TS-style mode, a more open higher-headroom mode, and a cleaner boost. It is inexpensive and, unusually for the type, its tone knob is genuinely useful.

The Plumes is best understood as a Tube Screamer for people who do not like Tube Screamers: same family, but more open, with the mid-hump and high-frequency roll-off pulled back so it can sound close to transparent. Owners like it as a cheap, versatile low-gain drive whose three modes and working tone knob are all usable. It is also a divisive pedal, though: a fair few find it too bright or trebly even with the tone rolled all the way down, and some say it does not stack or play well with their other drives. It comes up most often next to the Wampler Tumnus, and owners treat the two as different tools: the Plumes is the more open, transparent low-gain option, the Tumnus more mid-forward with more gain and body, and the Plumes stacks nicely running into a Tumnus.
