Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man

About the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man

The Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man is a legendary analog (bucket-brigade) delay with built-in chorus/vibrato modulation on the repeats. It gives the warm, dark, gently degrading echo heard on decades of records, and its modulation section is a defining feature (famously part of The Edge's U2 sound). It has been made in many sizes over the years.

The Deluxe Memory Man is one of the classic analog delays, prized for a warm, dark tone that degrades gently with each repeat, and for the modulation on those repeats that gives it that shimmering, Edge-like voice. The catch for buyers is choice: it exists as the coveted vintage big-box (corded, with MN3005 chips), the DMM XO, the 24V Deluxe, the 9V Nano, the tap-tempo 1100-TT and the Hazarai. Owners generally feel each newer, smaller iteration lost a little mojo, so the big-box units are the collectible favourites, while the modern ones are rated good and perfectly usable, just without the same character or value. It is genuinely loved, the kind of pedal people design a board around and miss when it is gone. If you mainly want the sound for less, owners point to the cheaper Deluxe Memory Boy and Memory Toy, the Xvive Echoman (a compact clone designed by the same engineer), or, for stronger modulation, the Benson Delay.
