Owners are clear about what a Big Muff is and is not. It is a fuzz that does one enormous sound gloriously, but it does not clean up from the guitar volume the way a Fuzz Face does and it is not a subtle overdrive: the Muff wants to be a Muff. It is also mid-scooped and bassy, so on its own it can get lost in a band mix; the usual fix is a boost or EQ to add mids and help it cut. On stacking, the advice is consistent: run drives into the Muff rather than after it (an overdrive or a RAT into a Big Muff works, an OD placed after it usually does not), and keep the fuzz early in the chain. Which one to buy is the real question, since the voicings differ more than the price does.
