About the Martin 000-15SM 12-Fret
The 000-15SM is Martin's all-solid mahogany 000 with a 12-fret neck joint, a slotted headstock and a satin finish, made in the USA at the Nazareth, Pennsylvania factory. The 12-fret joint lengthens the upper bout and changes where the bridge sits on the top. The build: non-scalloped spruce X bracing, a simple dovetail neck joint, a 25.4 inch scale, 20 frets on a 16 inch radius, a 1 3/4 inch nut and 2 1/4 inch string spacing at the bridge, with a Modified Low Oval neck; abalone diamond and square inlays, a bone nut and compensated bone saddle, ebony bridge pins, nickel side-mount open-gear tuners, and no binding. It is also made left-handed.
It replaced the 000-15S, adding the diamond and square inlays, a real rosette and nickel tuners with butterbean knobs. Some have a morado fingerboard and bridge, others East Indian rosewood, and recent spec sheets give the neck wood as select hardwood where older ones say mahogany. Because of material supply, the pickguard is tortoise pattern or black. New ones came with a Martin hardshell case through 2021; newer ones come with a softshell case or gig bag. Weighed examples come in at about 3.3 to 3.6 lb (1.5 to 1.6 kg), with necks about 0.81 to 0.825 inch deep at the first fret. No pickup is standard: Fishman systems were factory options, and many have one added later, such as a K&K Pure Mini or an LR Baggs Anthem. Other common owner changes are a strap button and replacement tuners.
