About the Martin Standard Series D-18
The D-18 is Martin's mahogany dreadnought: a solid Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides, a 14-fret body with a dovetail neck joint, a 25.4 inch scale and 20 frets on a 16 inch radius, with a bone nut.
Three generations matter when you buy one. Older D-18s, including 1990s and early-2000s examples, have a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, non-scalloped X bracing, black binding and enclosed tuners. Later Standard Series guitars moved to an ebony fingerboard and bridge, scalloped forward-shifted bracing, a Modified Low Oval neck with a 1 3/4 inch nut, open-gear tuners with butterbean knobs, Old Style 18 abalone dots, tortoise binding and pickguard, black bridge pins and an aging-toner top. The 2025 refresh brought Golden Era scalloped bracing, a thinner fingerboard with beveled edges, a vintage-style heel, an angled nut and a new belly bridge; refreshed guitars have ebony bridge pins and black binding. Besides the aging-toner top, sunburst and Ambertone tops were offered, the latter now listed as 1933 Ambertone.
It comes with a Martin hardshell case, and used ones often still have the case candy and paperwork. Factory Fishman or LR Baggs electronics were an option and some have a pickup added, so ask what is fitted and how. Check the body for cracks and opened seams: wood cracks, seam separation and fine finish cracks all turn up on used ones.
