About the Martin Standard Series D-28
The Standard Series D-28 is Martin's US-made rosewood dreadnought; dated examples run from 2007 to 2025. It has a solid Sitka spruce top, solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, a 14-fret body with a dovetail neck joint, a 25.4 inch scale and an ebony fingerboard and bridge, with 20 frets on a 16 inch radius.
Two redesigns matter when you buy one. Before 2017 it has standard non-scalloped X bracing, a 1 11/16 inch nut, enclosed Grover Rotomatic tuners, a black pickguard and white binding. The 2017 redesign moved the bracing forward (still non-scalloped) and brought a Modified Low Oval neck with a 1 3/4 inch nut, an aging-toner top, antique white binding, open-gear tuners with butterbean knobs, a tortoise pickguard and white plastic bridge pins. The 2025 refresh switched to scalloped Golden Era bracing, a thinner fingerboard, a slimmer heel, a new belly bridge and bone pins. Ambertone and sunburst tops were options; from 2025 they are called 1933 Ambertone and 1935 Sunburst. Serial numbers rise with the year: about 1.4 to 1.9 million on 2009 to 2015 guitars, 2.2 to 2.5 million on 2018 to 2020 ones and 2.9 million and up from 2025.
Weighed examples come in at about 4.3 to 5.1 lb (2.0 to 2.3 kg), with necks about 0.82 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret. It comes with a Martin hard case. Pickups are often fitted, at the factory or later, so ask how it was installed, and check that the truss rod still has adjustment room.
