About the Tokai AST-56 Goldstar Sound

The AST-56 is Tokai's mid-1980s take on a 1956 Stratocaster, a maple-neck model added beside the 54 and 64 patterns along with the rosewood-slab 62, which the earlier Springy Sound range never offered. It began as the TST-56 with the Fender-shaped headstock and the last 7okai-style logo (guitars of 1983 into 1984, one with a switch dated April 1983), and was relaunched in 1985 as the AST-56 with the new headstock and logo; the 56 on the decal separates it from the plain AST40 grade. These carried the grey-bottom E (or U) pickups after the rest of the range had moved to V-stamped units in 1985-86, and the range is spoken of as limited and short-lived. Owners date theirs from 1983 to 1986. Dating and finish go by what is under the pickguard: a three-digit code on the side of the selector switch (year then month, usually a few months before the build), a stamp on the body giving the build month, and a two-letter paint code in the control rout, Tokai never used the name Fiesta Red, so FO for Flamingo Orange is the nearest, and OR is Old Red, the colour usually called Dakota.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 17 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 13 discussion threads among 14 owners, 2021-2026. No names, nothing quoted.

Set next to a Fender American Vintage 56 the Tokai is said to hang with it; one collector who has had many apart names the TST and AST 56 and 62 as favourites, the reviews are described as consistently good for build and playability, and the one consistent thing about 1980s Tokais is said to be that they are fine instruments.
