Boss SL-2 Slicer

Über Boss SL-2 Slicer

The Boss SL-2 Slicer is a rhythmic effect that chops your sound into pre-programmed patterns, like a step-sequenced gate, tremolo and filter, synced to tap tempo or MIDI clock. It carries a large bank of patterns and has dual A/B outputs so you can send the sliced rhythm and your straight signal to different destinations. It is a specialist, digital-only effect, the successor to the SL-20.

Owners who use the SL-2 tend to love it, they call it awesome and freaking awesome, and one even reckons it out-performs a Strymon as a plain tremolo. It is a niche effect, so newcomers often ask what it actually does: it slices your signal into rhythmic, tempo-synced patterns for pulsing, chopped textures, and it has a lot of functions plus MIDI clock sync to lock in with the rest of your rig. The way owners get the most from it is creative: write parts around its rhythms for intros, interludes or attention-grabbing noise, use the A/B outputs to send a sliced beat and a sustained note to different effects at once (one owner does exactly this on violin), and, when you want something simpler, it makes a great tremolo. Owners tend to place it near the end of the chain. It is not for everyone, it takes some experimenting to find your use for it, and it is digital only, but as a rhythmic sound-design tool it is a lot of fun.
