MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion

Über MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion

The MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion is a vintage-voiced distortion in the classic 1970s mold (think Distortion+/DOD 250 territory), a full-range, tube-amp-in-a-box drive with a Crunch toggle for extra gain. Unlike a Tube Screamer it stays tight in the low end and does not clip or fizz, and it is a different, more vintage animal than MXR's Super Badass. It is inexpensive and works on bass too.

Owners who have spent time with the '78 tend to rate it well beyond its modest price, one says he can't talk it up enough and that it can do anything, another who sold his still wishes he had it back, calling it a pretty solid pedal with a different kind of dirt he has not found since, and it comes up as a great, cheap channel-2 overdrive. The character is a tube-amp-in-a-box: tight, full-range and not fizzy, so it also sounds good on bass. The way to unlock it is to boost it, put a Soul Food, a Tube Screamer or another OD in front and it does full 80s hair-metal saturation (one owner nails a Ratt tone that way), and a noise gate after it keeps things quiet. The honest caveats: on its own it is not a super-high-gain pedal, more a mild tube-amp voice, which is why it flies under the radar next to the usual Tube Screamers, and, like some other MXR pedals, its status LED is blindingly bright, enough that owners literally tape over it. For a cheap, vintage-flavored distortion that cleans up like an amp, though, it is an underrated pick.
