About the Electro-Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff Distortion/Sustainer Reissue

The Electro-Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff is EHX's reissue of the 1990s Russian-made green Big Muff, a variant of the Big Muff Pi fuzz. Compared with a standard Muff it is smoother, darker and more bass-heavy, with a scooped midrange and a little less gain, so it is less harsh as you turn the tone up. It is the version associated with David Gilmour's mid-90s lead tone, and it also comes in a smaller nano form.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 161 discussion threads among 9 owners, 2024. No names, nothing quoted.

The Green Russian has a devoted following: owners say it is forever on their board, sounds awesome (and looks cool), and more than one absolutely loves it, in part because it nails David Gilmour's mid-90s tone. Its character is a smoother, darker, more bass-heavy Muff with a scooped midrange and slightly less gain than a standard Big Muff, which is exactly why fans reach for it and also why it is not for everyone. The tips owners share revolve around that scoop: boost it with a Tube Screamer or clean boost in front and add an EQ after to push the mids and help it cut, one owner EQs around 1.6 kHz where it is most scooped to add mids and grit, and for the Gilmour singing lead set the level and tone around eleven o'clock with the sustain up around two or three. It is also a favorite on bass. The honest caveat is that it is dark and doomy by nature, best for rhythm, lower tunings and doom, so if you want more bite, aggression or midrange, owners point to the EHX Op-Amp Muff, an EQD Hoof or a Hizumitas instead. For a smooth, thick, Gilmour-flavored Muff, though, it is a classic.
