About the Fender American Vintage '52 Telecaster
The American Vintage '52 Telecaster is Fender's US-made reissue of the 1952 Tele, part of the American Vintage series that began in the early 1980s. The ash body is in thin nitro lacquer, usually Butterscotch Blonde with a single-ply black pickguard. The one-piece maple neck has a U profile, a 7.25 inch radius, 21 vintage frets and a 25.5 inch scale, with a bone nut 1.650 inch (42 mm) wide and a truss rod that adjusts at the heel. The screws are slotted, and the string-through bridge has three brass saddles under an ashtray cover, with single-line Fender Deluxe tuners.
Fender later relaunched the series. Older guitars came in a G&G tweed case with a spare six-saddle bridge and a modern wiring kit. Relaunched ones have Pure Vintage '52 pickups, a flash coat lacquer neck and a barrel switch tip, and came in an updated tweed case with a strap, cable, vintage wiring kit and bridge cover. Many have the serial stamped on the bridge plate, so a replaced bridge can leave a guitar without one; the neck and body carry dates too. Weighed examples come in at about 6.5 to 8.4 lb (3.0 to 3.8 kg), most 6.9 to 7.7 lb, with necks about 0.84 to 0.92 inch deep at the first fret and 0.90 to 1.03 inch at the 12th. The thin lacquer chips, checks and wears through on the back of the neck. Compensated saddles or a six-saddle bridge, new pickups and rewired switching are the usual changes; ask whether the original parts come with it.
