About the Fender American Standard Telecaster
The American Standard Telecaster is the US Tele Fender built in Corona, California from 1988 until 2016, when the American Professional replaced it. The body is alder or ash (natural finishes are ash), with a maple neck, a maple or rosewood board, a 25.5 inch scale, a 9.5 inch radius, 22 medium jumbo frets and a 1.685 inch (42.8 mm) nut. Two single coils share a three-way switch, volume and tone, and the strings load through the body into a six-saddle bridge. Weighed examples run about 6.9 to 9 lb (3.1 to 4.1 kg), most 7.1 to 8.5 lb, and measured necks run 0.79 to 0.87 inch deep at the first fret.
Three changes date one. Early ones have a TBX tone control on a stacked pot, later ones a no-load tone control. Before 2008 the saddles are cast; 2008 brought bent steel saddles on a stamped brass plate, a thinner finish undercoat and a tinted neck. From 2012 come Custom Shop pickups (Twisted Tele neck, Broadcaster bridge, listed as Vintage-Style on 2015 and 2016 ones) and a contoured back. Serials read E plus six digits in 1988, N plus the year's last digit in the 1990s and US plus the year in the 2010s; neck heel and pocket date stamps can be a year off. It came with a molded hard case (SKB on later ones), strap, cable, cloth and manual. Pickups are the usual swap, often with the originals included. Check the neck finish for lacquer lifting or chips around the dots and frets.
