About the Fender American Standard Jazz Bass

The American Standard Jazz Bass is Fender's US-made Jazz Bass, with dated examples from 1989 to 2015. It has an alder body, a maple neck with a modern C profile and graphite support rods, a rosewood or maple board with a 9.5 inch radius and 20 medium jumbo frets, a 34 inch scale and a 1.5 inch (38.1 mm) nut, with two single coils, two volumes and a master tone. The neck has a satin back and a gloss front.

Two changes matter when you buy one. From 2008 it has the High Mass Vintage bridge, which takes the strings through the body or from the top, and lighter tuners. Dated examples from 2012 on have Fender Custom Shop '60s Jazz Bass pickups; those from 2008 have American Standard single coils. Weighed examples come in at about 8.5 to 9.5 lb (3.9 to 4.3 kg), and measured necks are about 0.80 to 0.86 inch deep at the first fret and 0.90 to 0.97 inch at the 12th. Later ones came in a molded SKB-made Fender case with TSA locks, with adjustment wrenches, a manual, a strap, a cable and a polishing cloth. From 2010 the serial starts with US and the year's last two digits; 2000s serials start with Z and the year's last digit.

Owners often change the pickups, add a series and parallel switch or swap the pickguard, so ask which parts are original. Finishes include 3-Color Sunburst, Black, Olympic White and Jade Pearl Metallic.
