Fender Jazz

About the Fender Jazz

Most are vintage US Jazz Basses built in Fullerton, California, from 1964 to the mid-1970s; Custom Shop and American Vintage reissues and Japanese-made basses also appear. The vintage ones have an alder body, a maple neck with a 1.5 inch nut, a 34 inch scale, 20 frets and two single coils with a volume each and one tone control.

1960s boards are round-laminated Brazilian rosewood, with clay dots on 1964 necks and pearl dots after. CBS bought Fender in 1965. Binding arrived around the end of 1965, still with dots, and by mid-1966 the bound board had pearloid blocks, which run into the early 1970s; a 1966 can have any of the three layouts. Early 1970s basses also come with a maple board and black blocks. 1960s finishes are nitrocellulose, with tortoise guards; custom Candy Apple Red and Lake Placid Blue have matching headstocks, and the blues have usually faded toward green.

The heel is stamped with the date (7 MAY 64 A); pot codes end in year and week (304 7218 is week 18 of 1972), and neck and pots can be months apart because parts came from stock. The serial is on the neck plate, an L number on 1964 and 1965 basses. Weighed 1964 to 1975 basses come in at 8.8 to 9.7 lb (4.0 to 4.4 kg), with necks 0.80 to 0.86 inch deep at the first fret and 0.96 to 0.99 inch at the twelfth.

Expect refrets with new nuts, replaced pickups, tuners and pickguards, a Badass II bridge, and a missing bridge cover.
