About the Gibson ES-135
Gibson brought the ES-135 back in 1991 as a semi-hollow guitar with a Florentine cutaway and a center block. The body is 16 inches wide and 2 3/16 inches deep, laminated maple top, back and sides with f-holes and a bound top and back. The neck is maple, usually three-piece, with an unbound rosewood board, dot inlays, 22 frets, a 24.75 inch scale and a 1 11/16 inch nut; the model name is printed in gold down the center of the headstock. Hardware is chrome or gold, with Grover tuners, and finishes include Vintage Sunburst, Cherry, Wine Red, Ebony, Natural and Blueburst.
The specs changed during the run. Examples dated in the 1990s carry two P-100 pickups, stacked humbuckers, while Gibson '57 Classic humbuckers turn up on dated examples from 2000 to 2003, built at Gibson's Memphis factory. Earlier examples have a light Chromyte or balsa center block and late ones a mahogany block; most have a Tune-O-Matic bridge with a trapeze tailpiece, while late examples have a stop tailpiece. Necks measure about 0.80 to 0.83 inch deep at the first fret and 0.96 to 0.99 inch at the 12th, and weighed examples come in at about 7.7 to 8.5 lb (3.5 to 3.9 kg). Most come with the original Gibson hard case, whose lock is often broken or missing while the other latches still work. Finish cracks or checking at the neck heel are common. A Bigsby vibrato is a common addition, and some have gone back to the trapeze, leaving filled holes.
