About the Gibson SG Standard
The SG Standard is Gibson's solid mahogany double-cut, made in Nashville: a set mahogany neck joined with a long tenon at the 19th fret, and a bound rosewood board with 22 medium jumbo frets and trapezoid inlays on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius. Two humbuckers run through two volume and two tone controls and a three-way switch, with an aluminum Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop bar, and most years carry the large black five-ply pickguard.
The year matters most. Most examples from 2001 to 2016 pair a 490R neck pickup with a hotter 498T, and those from 2003 to 2014 have Gibson Deluxe tuners. The 2014 models carry a 120th anniversary inlay at the 12th fret and mostly '57 Classics with coil splits; the 2015 model, for Les Paul's 100th birthday, kept those pickups and added G FORCE robot tuners, a wider, thicker board and an adjustable zero-fret nut. 2018 examples have Burstbucker 61R and 61T pickups, a SlimTaper neck and Grover locking tuners. From 2019 it returned to a late-1960s style: 490R and 490T pickups with Alnico 2 magnets, a rounded neck, Grover Rotomatic tuners and a padded soft case instead of a hardshell. Weighed examples run about 6.1 to 7.5 lb (2.8 to 3.4 kg), most under 7 lb, with necks 0.80 to 0.87 inch deep at the first fret. Core colors are Heritage Cherry and Ebony, plus Custom Colors such as Silver Mist and Pelham Blue Burst. Swapped tuners (look for extra holes), nuts and pickups are common; check headstock edges for chips.
