About the Gibson J45 Standard
The J-45 Standard is Gibson's round-shoulder dreadnought, first introduced in 1942 and made in Bozeman, Montana: a solid Sitka spruce top on hand-scalloped X bracing, solid mahogany back and sides, and a mahogany SlimTaper neck on a compound dovetail joint, which recent examples set in hot hide glue. The rosewood board has 20 frets, mother-of-pearl dots and rolled edges on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius and a 1.725 inch (43.8 mm) nut. A TUSQ nut and saddle, a rosewood belly-up bridge, a teardrop tortoise pickguard, Grover Rotomatic tuners and a gloss nitro finish complete it.
The pickup dates it. Examples from about 2009 to 2012 have an LR Baggs Element under-saddle pickup with only a volume control inside the soundhole; current ones have the LR Baggs VTC, with volume and tone there. 2016 and 2017 examples carry the year engraved on the truss rod cover. Weighed examples come in at about 4.3 to 4.7 lb (1.9 to 2.1 kg), and measured necks are about 0.81 to 0.88 inch (20.6 to 22.4 mm) deep at the first fret. It comes in a Gibson hardshell case with a certificate of authenticity and paperwork. Vintage Sunburst is the usual finish and Heritage Cherry Sunburst the other common one; limited runs include a red spruce top version and special finishes. Owners sometimes fit a bone saddle and nut or different tuners, so ask whether the originals come with it. The nitro lacquer can show fine checking, so tell finish checks apart from cracks in the wood.
