About the Gibson Explorer '76
The Explorer '76 reissues Gibson's 1976 Explorer, which had brought back the 1958 shape in mahogany instead of korina. Gibson introduced it in 1990. It has a solid mahogany body, a set mahogany neck joined with a long tenon, and a rosewood board with dot inlays, 22 frets on a 24.75 inch scale with a 12 inch radius and a nut about 1 11/16 inch (43 mm) wide. Two uncovered ceramic humbuckers, a 496R at the neck and a 500T at the bridge, run through two volume controls, one tone control and a three-way switch, with a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar, mini Grover tuners and a white three-ply pickguard.
Most have a slim 1960s-style neck: measured necks run about 0.80 to 0.82 inch deep at the first fret and 0.85 to 0.89 inch at the 12th. Weighed examples come in at about 7.8 to 9.6 lb (3.5 to 4.4 kg), most between 8 and 9 lb. The usual finishes are Ebony, white and Cherry; some examples, most of them white, have an ebony board instead of rosewood. Examples from the late 1980s and 1990s came in a brown Gibson hardshell case. The gloss nitro often shows checking, and the body points and headstock tip pick up chips. Repaired headstock breaks behind the nut turn up, and the pickups and pots are what owners most often change.
