Gibson Firebird V

About the Gibson Firebird V

The reverse-body Firebird first appeared in 1963 as Gibson's first neck-through guitar and gave way to the non-reverse Firebird in 1965. Later production is made in Nashville. The first and fifth digits of the serial are the year and the second to fourth the day of that year, so 027760405 was made on day 277 of 2006.

Examples made before 2010 have banjo-style tuners; those from 2010 to 2015 have Steinberger gearless 40:1 tuners, and the 2010s ones ceramic mini-humbuckers, a 495R at the neck and a 495T at the bridge. The 2015 model has a neck 0.050 inch wider on each side and a brass zero-fret nut that adjusts for height; otherwise the nut is about 1 11/16 inch (43 mm). Weighed examples from the 1990s and 2000s run about 8.0 to 8.7 lb (3.6 to 4.0 kg), from the 2010s 7.3 to 7.8 lb (3.3 to 3.5 kg). Necks measure about 0.81 to 0.84 inch deep at the first fret and 0.83 to 0.88 inch at the 12th.

The 9-ply mahogany and walnut neck runs through the body, with mahogany wings, a bound rosewood board, trapezoid inlays and 22 frets on a 24.75 inch scale. Vintage Sunburst, Ebony and Classic White are the regular finishes; white ones often show finish checking and hairline cracks and yellow with age. It comes in a Gibson hardshell case with a truss rod wrench, manual and warranty papers. Pickups and tuners are often swapped, so ask whether the originals come with it.
