About the Gibson LG0 1960s

The LG-0 is Gibson's entry-level small-body flat-top, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan from 1958 to 1974: a solid mahogany top, back and sides, a mahogany neck, ladder bracing and tortoise binding on the top. Measured bodies are about 14 1/8 to 14 1/4 inches wide at the lower bout and 4 1/2 inches deep at the end block, on a 24 3/4 inch scale, and weighed examples come in at about 3.7 to 4.2 lb (1.7 to 1.9 kg). It came in a chipboard case, often with an alligator-pattern cover.

The bridge and the nut date a 1960s example. Early ones have a small rectangular rosewood bridge; from 1962 a plastic bridge held by bolts through the top replaced it, and late 1960s examples have a rosewood bridge with an adjustable saddle, a change several date to 1968. Examples up to 1964 have a 1 11/16 inch nut; it narrowed from 1965, and later ones measure about 1 9/16 inch (39 to 40 mm). From 1968 some have a spruce top. Serial numbers of the period can point to several years, so these features narrow the date. The plastic bridge tends to lift, and many have had it replaced with a rosewood bridge and bone saddle. Check for a reinforced bridge plate, repaired back cracks, reglued back braces, a neck reset, replaced tuners and an added heel strap button. The screwed-on pickguard often warps or goes missing, the top can belly behind the bridge, and some have been converted to X bracing.
