Strymon Volante Magnetic Echo Machine

About the Strymon Volante Magnetic Echo Machine

The Strymon Volante is a Magnetic Echo Machine: it emulates tape, drum and studio (Echorec-style) echoes, with stereo, a looper, spring reverb and deep MIDI. It packs a lot of vintage-voiced delay sounds, and owners note you need MIDI to unlock its full capability.

Owners are big fans of the Volante. Its calling card is range: it is a Magnetic Echo Machine that covers tape, drum and studio (Echorec-style) echoes with stacks of vintage-voiced sounds, and more than one owner keeps it permanently on the board because it can do just about anything, rating it as solid a delay as they own. It handles Echorec and drum-echo territory really well, though for a dedicated tape-Echoplex sound some reach for a Belle Epoch. One thing worth knowing: it is a deep pedal, and owners say you are using only a fraction of its capability without a MIDI controller. It sits among the serious tape and echo pedals, cross-shopped with Strymon's own El Capistan and the newer EC-1, the Boss RE-202, the Belle Epoch and the UA Starlight; owners reckon the Starlight may have the purest tape sound, but several found the Volante held up better with fuzz and distortion in front of it.
