About the Tokai Silver Star SS-80

The SS-80 is the top of the Silver Star range, Tokai's large-headstock seventies-style Strat, of 1979-80, priced at 80,000 yen; the natural-finish SS-85N carried a 5,000-yen upcharge and pairs a two-piece sen body, rosewood board, brass nut and bridge, black hardware and a DiMarzio FS-1 pickup. The 80 grade is lacquer-finished, marked by an A at the end of the serial code, and the model is rarer than the Springy Sound ST80, which fetches more only for its cooler decal, with the guitars usually staying with the people who have them. Owners date theirs to 1980.

The best-priced as cards, a row of them; every other ad as a line, by ask. Each ask is the seller’s own number; the platform’s mark opens the listing. Each one says when we last confirmed it at its source: the price and availability are from that visit, so check the marketplace before you go.

Every recorded sale, one point each: 9 of them, placed by the day the ad went up. Too few sales to draw a trend through them without inventing one, so the points speak for themselves. Condition is mixed, so some of the spread is a mint against a fair rather than the market moving.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 6 discussion threads among 6 owners, 2023-2026. No names, nothing quoted.

An SS-85N is one of its owner's favourites, the sen grain under natural finish being the draw; the sunburst-over-sen finishes are loved by another owner, and the 80-grade Silver Star is counted among the rare, great guitars that would be the last to be let go, with the caveat from one sceptic that the 45, 50, 60 and 80 share the same bodies and necks and the top grade commands silly money.
