About the Boss AC-3 Acoustic Simulator
The Boss AC-3 Acoustic Simulator is a pedal that reshapes an electric guitar's tone to imitate an acoustic, with several body-type voicings, a built-in reverb, and an XLR direct output for going straight to a desk or PA. It replaced the earlier AC-2 (which had no reverb). Owners are clear that it sounds far better run direct into a PA, an FRFR speaker or a dedicated acoustic amp than into a normal guitar amp, whose speaker cannot reproduce the acoustic high end.

What owners have said elsewhere
Paraphrased from 123 discussion threads among 8 owners, 2024-2025. No names, nothing quoted.
Owners' experience with the AC-3 comes down almost entirely to how you set it up. The single most repeated tip is to run it direct into a PA, an FRFR cabinet or an acoustic amp rather than a guitar amp, since a guitar speaker cannot reproduce the shimmer that sells an acoustic tone. Beyond that, owners get more convincing results by strumming softly (a hard strum gives it away), adding an EQ to shape the mids and highs, and using the reverb, and they note you cannot run it into distortion or a synth pedal, so you split or switch the signal. Used this way it can be genuinely useful, one owner loves it for 12-string acoustic sounds, and mixing the acoustic sim with a fuzz or gain pedal makes cool, fat tones. The honest reality is that this is a divisive category. Plenty of owners find any acoustic simulator a poor substitute for the real thing, preferring an actual acoustic with an LR Baggs EQ or a piezo pickup, and some own an AC-3 but rarely use it, reasoning that in a full-band mix nobody hears the difference from a good clean tone. If a convincing solo acoustic is the goal a piezo or a modeler gets closer, but for an occasional acoustic flavor from your electric, run direct and play gently and it does the job.
