Why this number?

The typical used price is the median of 130 used sales observed in the last 90 days, with outliers removed and the figure rounded. An observed sale is often the last asking price rather than a confirmed hammer price.

About the Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer

The Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer is a classic, affordable compressor with four controls: Level, Tone, Attack and Sustain. The Attack knob sets it apart from simpler squeeze boxes, giving you control over how quickly it clamps down, and the Sustain and Level controls double as input and output volume. It replaced the older CS-2, which some still prefer for its warmth, turns up cheap on the used market, and is a common candidate for modding.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 210 discussion threads among 11 owners, 2024-2025. No names, nothing quoted.

Owners treat the CS-3 as a dependable, no-fuss compressor: a classic that will do the job, good enough as an only compressor, and, in the words of more than one owner, very usable, the kind of pedal you never get rid of. What they like about it specifically is the Attack knob, which cheaper compressors leave out, and how cheap a used one is. The usage advice is consistent: run it early, right after the tuner and before your gain, and remember that Sustain acts as an input volume and Level as an output, so you can also use it as a boost after your drives. The main gripes are honest ones. It colors the tone, though owners say less than an MXR Dyna Comp, and it can be noisy, adding hiss and even a bit of feedback, so some run it inside a noise gate's loop and others have it modded to quiet it down. A few simply could not dial in a sound they liked and moved to a more transparent compressor like a Keeley or a Wampler Ego. For the money, though, it stays on a lot of boards.
