Boss AW-3 Dynamic Wah

About the Boss AW-3 Dynamic Wah

The Boss AW-3 Dynamic Wah is an auto-wah and envelope filter: instead of a treadle it opens the filter in response to your picking dynamics, and you can add an expression pedal if you want manual wah control. It is loaded with features for a cheap pedal, including a Humanizer mode that produces vowel and talk-box style sounds, and it works for both guitar and bass.

For a budget auto-wah, the AW-3 has plenty of fans: one bassist who owns several filters calls it the best bass filter he has heard, and owners note it is crazy cheap for how many features it packs, singling out the Humanizer mode as amazing and easy to use. It also works surprisingly well as a hands-free, expressionless wah, close enough that you might not realize it is an auto-wah. Bass players like it for adding a defined onset in front of a synth pedal. It is not without gripes, though. Some owners found the effect too predictable and repetitive, wanting more control than it offers, one hit a volume drop that made it unusable for him, and several point to an EHX Q-Tron as a more versatile (and sometimes cheaper) envelope filter. But if you want a feature-packed auto-wah on a budget, especially for bass, it earns its recommendations.
