About the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal
The HM-2 Heavy Metal is a Boss distortion sold from October 1983 to October 1991. It has Level and Distortion knobs plus two Color Mix controls, Low and High, that boost or cut about 20 dB around 100 Hz and 1 kHz; it weighs 400 g (14 oz) and draws 10 mA. The Distortion knob has a wide dead zone in the middle of its travel where the gain barely changes. It was made in Japan until 1988 and then in Taiwan; both carry a black label, marked Made in Japan or Made in Taiwan, and Japanese examples have Mitsubishi M5218 op-amps.
The serial number is on a sticker inside, under the battery, and dates a pedal to the month. Early Taiwanese ones can have a six-digit serial starting with 0, which a decoder reads as 1981 though it means 1988. The bottom label is often scuffed, removed or missing. Every HM-2 is an ACA pedal: it runs on a 9 V battery, an ACA adapter or a daisy chain, while a modern 9 V adapter on its own leaves the LED dim or dark and the pedal underpowered. Conversion to standard 9 V adapters is the usual modification. The rubber grommet on the battery door screw is often torn or missing, battery snaps are often broken or taped up, and scratchy pots and jacks are commonly cleaned. Velcro or adhesive left on the base turns up too. Some come with the original box and paperwork.
