About the Boss OC-5 Octave

The Boss OC-5 is a polyphonic octave pedal that adds octaves below and above your note and, in poly mode, tracks chords cleanly. It has a range control to set which notes get the octave, plus a vintage monophonic mode, and its tracking is excellent, especially on single notes and distorted leads. It supersedes the older OC-3 and OC-2, and can even split guitar and bass to separate outputs.

What owners have said elsewhere

Paraphrased from 155 discussion threads among 11 owners, 2024-2025. No names, nothing quoted.

The OC-5 is Boss's polyphonic octave pedal, and owners rate its tracking highly, calling it insanely clean, especially on single notes and distorted leads. It adds octaves up and down, tracks chords in poly mode, keeps a vintage monophonic mode, and has a range control so you choose which notes get the octave; owners note it does everything the older OC-3 does and more, and can even split your guitar and bass to two amps. Plenty love it: several call it the superior octave pedal by nearly every metric and the go-to for adding a bass line, especially for bass-style playing. Setup is the key, though. Run it in poly mode rather than lowest-note-only and back the range off right where it switches, so only the low strings get the octave, which cures a lot of the mud. Its weak spot is full chords and heavy strumming: some owners find it catches more than the lowest note and turns muddy, tinny or synthetic, and it struggles for heavily down-tuned players, so a few gave up using it for chords even though single notes track superbly. It is cross-shopped with the EHX POG and Micro POG, where owners find the OC-5 tracks tighter (the POG is shimmery and crisp on clean) and costs well under a POG2, and with the Boss SY-5 for even better tracking.
