Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter

About the Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter

The Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter is a feature-packed phaser. Beyond the usual controls it offers selectable stage counts (4, 8, 10 and 12 stages), unusual Rise and Fall modes that sweep the phase in only one direction like a barber's pole or Shepard tone, a Step mode, tap tempo and an expression-pedal input for sweeping the rate by foot. Among its modes it can also cover a classic Phase 90 style sound.

Owners keep describing the PH-3 as underrated, an overlooked gem that does not get the credit it deserves, and people who sit down with one come away impressed by how versatile it is, one has used his for around twenty years. The reason is the mode list: selectable 4 to 12 stages, tap tempo, an expression input, and the unusual Rise and Fall modes that phase in one direction only, one owner was sold the moment he realised the Jimmy Eat World waterfall sound was just the Fall mode. Practical tips owners share are to place it before your drive section, as with most phasers, and to try the 10-stage mode with an expression pedal sweeping through it. The honest catch is level: several owners hear a noticeable volume drop when the effect is on and end up boosting it, one struggled to find a setting that kept both the effect and the volume where he wanted, and a couple find it a bit robotic or digital next to an analog phaser like a Phase 90. If you want a deep, do-everything phaser and do not mind managing the level, it delivers a lot for the money.
