The appeal is depth: it can do just about any reverb, with crazy options to dial in, and a hidden bonus is the built-in Space Echo delay mode and all the tricks that come with it. A couple of practical tips: buy or program presets to save yourself setup time, and, because the onboard delay is fairly limited, run a dedicated delay alongside it rather than relying on the RV-500 for that. The honest caveats: that limited delay means it is a reverb first and not a two-in-one, and it is not universally loved, one owner adores his DD-500 and MD-500 but never quite clicked with the RV-500, and another comparing it to a Strymon went with the Strymon. But as a do-anything reverb, especially at used prices, it is a lot of pedal.
