Fender American Special Stratocaster

About the Fender American Special Stratocaster

The American Special Stratocaster is a US-made Strat from Fender's Corona, California factory. It has an alder body in gloss urethane, a maple Modern C neck with a satin back, a maple or rosewood board with a 9.5 inch radius and 22 jumbo frets, a synthetic bone nut 1.685 inch (42.8 mm) wide, and the large '70s-style headstock. The bridge is a vintage-style six-saddle tremolo with narrower saddle spacing.

Three Texas Special single coils, overwound with alnico 5 magnets, run through a master volume, a tone for the neck pickup and a tone for the bridge pickup, both on the Greasebucket circuit that rolls off treble without adding bass. Many carry the Custom Shop Texas Special set. An HSS version swaps the bridge single coil for an Atomic humbucker. Serials read US plus the last two digits of the year.

Weighed examples come in at about 7.2 to 8.3 lb (3.3 to 3.8 kg). It shipped with a deluxe gig bag rather than a hard case, with the tremolo arm, hex wrenches, polishing cloth and paperwork. Pickup swaps, locking tuners and replacement bridges or saddles are the usual changes; ask whether the factory parts come with it. Limited runs include ash-body versions and special colors, and Surf Green was offered and later dropped.
